Dear Performance Nutrition Leaders,
This week: Review of carbohydrate guidelines for endurance athletes, the latest news, and a new fibre supplement from Momentous.
🧠 ON THE GROUND
"From Metabolism to Medals" is a landmark review led by Professor James Morton — one of the most cited sports nutrition researchers in the world and a former nutritionist to Team Sky.
His co-authors include Javier Gonzalez, Marc Fell, Jamie Pugh, Gareth Wallis, Tim Podlogar, and Mark Hearris.
The review synthesises decades of research on carbohydrate metabolism during exercise, alongside applied insights from working directly with elite cyclists, marathoners, and ultra-endurance athletes.
Current ACSM guidance — still widely referenced — has historically cited ~90 g per hour as an upper intake value, based on evidence around intestinal carbohydrate transport and observed limits to exogenous oxidation during exercise.
In recent years, however, some elite athletes have begun experimenting with substantially higher intakes. Reports from WorldTour cycling suggest riders may target ~120 g per hour in demanding stages, with structured gut-training protocols aiming to improve tolerance at even higher levels.
Drawing on observations from Grand Tours, elite marathons, and ultra-endurance competition, the authors combine laboratory evidence with applied experience to discuss how fuelling practices at the top level may be evolving.

💡PERFORMANCE TECH
Most fiber supplements are psyllium husk.
Momentous Fiber+ adds two more ingredients — Solnul® resistant potato starch and rice bran hull.

According to Momentous, Solnul® resistant potato starch ferments in the colon into short-chain fatty acids, supporting gut barrier integrity and beneficial bacteria including Bifidobacterium and Akkermansia.
They point to a 2023 randomised controlled trial published in Nutrients confirming the prebiotic effect at 3.5g per day. Rice bran adds bulk for digestive transit.
Momentous also cite emerging research linking SCFAs to gut-brain signalling pathways tied to neurotransmitter activity.
