Dear Performance Nutrition Leaders,

This week: Prof Michael Gleeson joins the returning We Do Science podcast, the latest industry news and opportunities, and FLYCARB enters the broccoli-based performance supplement category.

💡 EXPERT OPINION

Four Ps. Better decisions.

Knowing the evidence is one part of the job. Deciding what to do with it is another.

We Do Science is back, now with video, and Dr Laurent Bannock’s first guest is Professor Michael Gleeson, Emeritus Professor of Exercise Biochemistry at Loughborough University.

The conversation centres on four Ps of performance nutrition: personalise, periodise, pre-fuel and prepare.

Across examples from football and endurance sport, they discuss matching nutrition to training demands, rehearsing competition fuelling, and accounting for athlete preferences. Carbohydrate, hydration, gut training and supplements all feature, alongside the role of wearables and testing.

For practitioners, the appeal is the focus on making decisions. What does this athlete need? What can they put into practice? And how will you evaluate whether the strategy is working?

The episode also tackles supplement marketing and the limits of having more information. A useful conversation for anyone translating nutrition science into an athlete’s daily routine.

💡PERFORMANCE TECH

Nomio is the familiar name in broccoli-based performance shots. Now competitors are entering the category.

FLYCARB has launched ITC Shot, a lemon-flavoured sachet containing broccoli-derived isothiocyanates—the same family of compounds behind Nomio’s proposition.

Mixed with around 100 ml of water, it is positioned for use three hours before hard training or competition. A single serving is listed at £3.49, with no refrigeration required.

For practitioners, the interesting development is the growing choice around an emerging ingredient. Different formulations bring questions about active dose, stability and whether findings from one product apply to another. FLYCARB itself acknowledges that the performance evidence is still developing.

Nomio has helped put broccoli shots on athletes’ radar. FLYCARB is offering another way into the category.
