This weeks issue is powered by The Performance Nutrition Network

Dear Performance Nutrition Leaders,

This week: a cardboard box at the Tour de France, the latest appointments and industry news, and a whole-food gel that hits 30g of carbohydrate.

💡 HOT TOPIC

Cyclingnews went to the Tour looking for tech and found a cardboard box.

Josh Croxton spotted it at a professional cycling team hotel in Barcelona — a shipping label listing Mitopure powder, softgels and gummies.

Mitopure is a trademarked form of Urolithin A sold as Timeline.

Urolithin A is a postbiotic, produced in the gut from ellagitannins in pomegranates and raspberries. Only some people make meaningful amounts, depending on gut microbiome, genetics and diet. The proposed mechanism is mitophagy — clearing damaged mitochondria. Mitopure is NSF Certified for Sport.

Croxton asked Dr Sam Impey, formerly of British Cycling and the team now known as Jayco AlUla, now Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Officer at Hexis.

"It's a postbiotic that might have benefits, but the evidence base in high-performing athletes is not there. We know way less about how this works and how to use it than ketones."

Dr Sam Impey talks through it with Anthony Walsh of the Roadman podcast.

Singh and colleagues (2022) reported gains in middle-aged adults. In highly trained male runners, four weeks facilitates recovery but "did not further enhance performance".

💡PERFORMANCE TECH

Veloforte builds its range on whole-food ingredients.

Rosso is the brand's raspberry energy gel.

A 45g sachet delivers 30g of dual-source carbohydrate and 150mg of sodium, from unrefined brown rice syrup, concentrated apple, raspberry (4.5%) and date juice, and maple syrup. Cinnamon extract and pink Himalayan salt complete the list.

It is Informed Sport certified and vegan. There is no caffeinated version.

Veloforte describes the texture as "silky smooth" and positions Rosso for "bigger training days and race days".

The brand states the carbohydrate is dual-source but does not publish the glucose to fructose ratio.

At 30g a gel, an athlete fuelling at 90g an hour takes three of these and 450mg of sodium with them.
